Momijidani Park (紅葉谷公園, “Maple Valley Park”) is the best place on Miyajima to see autumn leaves. The maples usually turn red from mid to late November, and the park sits right at the foot of Mount Misen, about a 15-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine.
Why Momijidani is special
The park follows a small mountain stream lined with hundreds of maple trees. Red bridges, stone lanterns and the occasional deer make it one of the most photographed autumn scenes in western Japan. The Miyajima Ropeway station is at the top of the park, so you can combine the leaves with a trip up Mount Misen.
When to visit
- Peak color: usually mid to late November. Check the Miyajima Tourist Association for the current year’s forecast.
- Best time of day: before 10:00 for soft light and fewer people.
- Weekends in November are the busiest days of the year on the island. Visit on a weekday if you can.
How to get there
- Take the JR or Hiroden line to Miyajimaguchi.
- Ride the ferry to Miyajima (about 10 minutes).
- Walk past Itsukushima Shrine and follow the signs to Momijidani Park and the ropeway.
Where to eat after the leaves
November evenings get cold, and a hot bowl of ramen is the perfect way to warm up. On your way home, stop at Hiroshima Ramen Momiji on the 2nd floor of HIRODEN etto, right at the Miyajimaguchi Ferry Terminal. Fittingly, our name Momiji (椛) means the autumn-colored maple leaf.
November is also the start of Hiroshima oyster season. Try our Hiroshima Oyster Ramen — certified as a Miyajima local ramen by the Japan Ramen Association in 2025.
